PEP66
from Alpha is what I like to call a different kind of cooler.
The heatsink is made using the same technology like the PAL6035,
but the fins are not hexagonal and the dimensions are also
bigger. The same cooper base and high design quality. What
makes this cooler special is the position of the fan, on one
side of the heatsink.
Unfortunately
we were not able to test the cooler keeping the fan in this
position because this design didn't fit the K7T Limited Edition
design. In fact this design doesn't fit a lot of motherboards,
but we found a way to test the cooler, although a performance
drop may apply. We took the cover from PAL6035 and inserted
it in the cover of the heatsink. After this we screwed the
same 7K Ys-Tech fan on the top. Not very hard we got a traditional
high performance cooler.
The clip
is the same used by PAL6035, so you won't have any problems
because it's a very good one.
Although
this cooler was not tested in the manufacturer conditions,
we discovered that even with an on top fan it is a very powerful
solution, in fact it succeeded to outperform PAL6035 with
one degree in a lower ambient temperature. In normal conditions
I expect for a performance with 2-3 degrees better due to
the tunnel effect created by the on side fan. With the YS-Tech
fan this was quite a noisy solution, but this is certainly
a cooler for overclockers. The noise level was a little bit
lower for PEP66, due to its taller design.
We have
no word about the CPUs which can be used with Alpha coolers,
but based on my experience with PAL6035 and PEP66 you can
use all the AMD CPUs currently on the market, while overclocking.
A fully
recommended cooler especially if you have a motherboard able
to suit to its design. You have to pay, but the price / performance
ratio is very good.
